Project diary and images

I updated this page daily during the project; it gives a day-by-day account of my tasks and experiences.

(When I have had a chance to reflect on the outcomes of the project, I will add more text here…)

DAY 15: Friday 7 September: 10.00 am – 3pm: 5 hours as TEMPORARY ASSISTANT

  • Duties: Gallery assistant (sole charge!). Open up, engage with clients, transact and record sales, close up.
  • Location: The National, 212 Madras St, Chch

DAY 14: Thursday 6 September: 10.30 am-12 noon: 1.5 hours as TECHNICAL WRITER

  • Duties: Review first draft of procedural documentation w client. Brainstorming requirements for metadata docmentation
  • Location: Cafe on campus at Ilam

1pm-4pm: 3 hours as ARTIST

  • Duties: Casting assistant in possibly dodgy pewter-casting  operation: casting holes/ imperfections in the concrete floor.
  • Location: The Casting Room – gallery space in the Sculpture Department, Fine Arts, Ilam

DAY 13: Wed 5 September: 11am-4pm: 5 hours as TEMPORARY ASSISTANT

  • Duties: Sorting digital images into Archive, researching Volunteer Canterbury registration procedure, to recruit a local volunteer to take over this task.
  • Location: New Brighton Heritage museum.

DAY 12: Tues 4 September: 9.15 am-4.15pm: 7 hours as HOME HELP

  • Duties: Cleaning munted house til it gleams (well, until the grit and dust return from the serious cracks in the walls): bathroom, bedroom, stairway and hallway. Washing dishes after delicious lunch.
  • Location: Shirley

DAY 11: Mon 3 September: 10 am – 5pm: 7 hours as TEMPORARY ASSISTANT

  • Duties: General gallery assistant
  • Location: The National, 212 Madras St, Chch

6pm-10pm: 4 hours as HOME HELP

  • Duties: hanging paintings in home of resident now in 3rd home since the quake
  • Location: Wesleyan Home, Papanui Rd

DAY 10: Sun 2 September: 9am-12 noon: 3 hours as TECHNICAL WRITER

  • Duties: Development of first draft of process documentation
  • Location: Offsite (Cafe at Point Break backpackers)

1pm-4 pm – 3 hours as ARTIST:

  • Duties: rendering drawings by children onto cloth, applying colour
  • Location: New Brighton Community gallery

DAY 9: Sat 1 September 10 am – 12 noon: 2 hours as TECHNICAL WRITER

  • Duties: Information design, development of first draft of process documentation
  • Location: Offsite (Cafe at Point Break backpackers)

1pm-2.30pm: 1.5 hours as ACTIVIST (new role 🙂 )

  • Duties: Participate in United Voices (Christchurch/Canterbury residents) protest march.
  • Location: North Hagley Park, Christchurch

DAY 8: Fri 31 August 10 am – 4 pm: 6 hours as TEMPORARY ASSISTANT

  • Duties: Sorting digital image files between pcs and filing them in dated folders
  • Location: The New Brighton and District Heritage Museum.

DAY 7: Thur 30 August

10am-1.45pm: 3.75 hours as TECHNICAL WRITER

  • Duties: Research for process documentation
  • Location: Sculpture studio, Fine Art Dept, Ilam

1.45 pm – 3.15pm: 1.5 hours as HOME HELP

  • Duties: Cleaning the sink, then client drop-off at shopping mall
  • Location:  Sculpture studio, Fine Art Dept, Ilam

DAY 6: Wed 29 August 11.30 am – 4.30pm:5 hours as TEMPORARY ASSISTANT

  • Duties: Sorting and filing committee minutes, matching Before and After earthquake images of local buildings for the 2012 museum calendar, locating water images for an upcoming river festival project, collating and sorting digital image files for easy categorisation.
  • Location: The New Brighton and District Heritage Museum.

DAY 5: Tue 28 August.

9am-12 noon: 3 hours as TEMPORARY ASSISTANT

  • Duties: On behalf of Brighton Community Gallery, visiting local businesses to promote the gallery’s new host-a-painting scheme. Success!! Three takers, two maybes.
  • Location: New Brighton Mall
  • Images: to follow

1pm-6pm: 5 hours as ARTIST

  • Duties: Assistant to final-year Sculpture student. Included unskilled labouring; critical response/contemporary jewellery discourse; assisting with guerilla installation in the porch of the Vice-Chancellor’s office.
  • Location: Fine Art, Ilam

DAY 4: Mon 27 August.

10am – 5pm: 6 hours as TEMPORARY ASSISTANT, 1 hour as TECHNICAL AUTHOR.

  • Duties: Temp: Unpacking and pricing goods, returning rented equipment, client contact.
  • Duties: Tech Author: Proofreading
  • Location: The National, 212 Madras St, Christchurch

7.30pm – 9.30 pm: 2 hours as TECHNICAL AUTHOR

  • Duties: Proofreading, editing, originating material
  • Location: (offsite)
  • Images: To follow

DAY 3: Sun 26 August. 3pm-5pm: 2 hours as ARTIST.

Duties: Rendering drawings by local children onto undercoated fabric, adding colour as specified by the artists.

Location: Brighton Community Gallery

DAY 2: Sat 25 August.

12.30 pm – 5.30 pm: 5 hours as TEMPORARY ASSISTANT.

  • Duties: Gold Star street collection for Home and Family charity.
  • Location: Northwood Countdown

DAY 1: Fri 24 Aug. 1pm-7pm: 6 hours as ARTIST.

  • Duties: Assisting with hanging show, being present at opening, networking, talking to guests.
  • Location: The National, 212 Madras St, Christchurch.

    What a wonderful project Sarah; I’ve had a great insight into your life and now fully appreciate what a multi-skilled and talented person you are. Well done for thinking/planning/executing this project and giving so much of yourself where there is obviously such a great need.
